This is my new blog. My first blog, in fact. Welcome!
You know what they say - the best time was yesterday, but the second best time is now. Less flippantly, I'm playing around with self-hosting some apps at the moment. It's really rewarding, but it requires quite a bit of research, tinkering and general learning. Writing up a few things will help me get things straight, will give me something to refer back to when I inevitably have to redo things, and may even help someone else.
Also, a blog feels like the way the web should be - simple, personal, not reliant on any big platforms. Sometimes simple is best.
Big thanks to Louie Mantia for his blog post How to Make a Damn Website. Reading that inspired me to keep it simple, remember how I built my first site (nearly 30 years ago!) and just get on with it.
By day, I'm a software developer. I've been doing this professionally for about 20 years, working with a variety of different systems & languages. By night, I'm a tired software developer who may or may not feel like working on personal projects. As well as proper computer things, I also read books, watch films, play games, cook, walk & garden. This blog will mainly be techy stuff, but who knows - perhaps some leisure things may sneak in.
